Parallels Between Romans and Americans
1. Sabine Women vs Sobbing Women
In the film Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, the brothers all sing about the sobbin' women they need to go get to be their wives. Just like the Romans, they ran off and stole women their women.
2. Melting pot
Just like America today, Romans took ideas from many other people to start their society, like Greek and Etruscan influences.
3. Republic
The Romans established a republic. In our Pledge Allegiance, it states, "I pledge allegience to the flag of the United States of America, and to the REPUBLIC, which it stands..." They also had a senate, like us.
4. Roads, Roads, Roads
By the time the Roman Empire was at its peak, it had over 400,000 miles of road. It connected the country. In America, we have done the same thing, but ours also included train tracks as well as paved highways for cars.
5. Harry Potter
One of my favorite characters in the Harry Potter series was REMUS Lupin. He was a professor at the school, but he was also a werewolf. His namesake, Remus of Ancient Rome, was raised by wolves, along with his twin brother, Romulus.

I'm so glad you thought of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers! Every time we are in class and Sis. Insalaco talks about the Rape of the Sabine Women, I always want to sing, "And the women was sobbin', sobbin', sobbin'". Roads are another huge accomplishment. Infrastructure is definitely something that sets apart a developed nation from a developing one. It is unbelievable how lucky we are to have such a great road system.
ReplyDeleteI really liked all of your ideas! They were very unique and things not many people would think of. I'm really glad you put in your example about Harry Potter I hadn't even put that together that those were related but it just goes to show how many things in our society relate back to Rome. I also wrote about the road systems and I think it is so impressive how all of their infastructure has lasted thousands of years and how they were so efficient.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I appreciate most about your post is the idea that Rome was a melting pot like America considers itself to be today. This is something I hadn't thought of. Having people from all different cultures and parts of the world is really an advantage, though, because it brings so many new ideas, talents and skill sets to the workforce and the average lifestyle. I know that our country would not be what it is today without the presence and influence of so many different cultures. Rome flourished anciently for the same reason.
ReplyDeleteYour post is very creative. It is interesting how significant roads are to a society like Rome or the United States. I think communication and trade are huge in uniting a people, especially during the time of ancient Rome and when the United States was being founded. Roads really are pretty basic when it comes to keeping a people happy under the same rule over a great distance.
